Sony WH-1000XM5: Features
When you are in an office environment, Speak-to-Chat feature will pause the audio when your voice is detected, and it will allow you to hold the conversation in ambient mode.
If someone talks to you while you are listening with this XM5, we can activate the Quick Attention mode by holding your hand over the right earcup. Quick Attention mode provides an easy way of increasing your awareness of your surroundings by piping in ambient sound.
A sensor on the interior of the left earcup is responsible for the wear detection feature, and it performs flawlessly. The audio was only ever paused when the left earcup was totally taken from my ear, and it always resumed as soon as you wore it again.
You can use Quick Access to link the noise-canceling button’s double or triple clicks to a particular service. Currently, the single choice is “Spotify Tap,” which starts Spotify if the app is already open on your mobile device.
Precise Voice Pickup and DSEE Extreme features operate automatically without any user interaction. However, the former does need to be toggled on in the app. The most recent iteration of Sony’s AI upscaling technology, called DSEE Extreme, is designed to increase the audio quality of lossless video.
The Mark 5 can pair two devices at the same time. As an example, we can pair the headset with the laptop to listen to music while connecting to the mobile phone. So we don’t miss any calls while we enjoy the music. But you can’t use this feature and listen to music wirelessly using the LDAC feature at the same time because of the frequency.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Design
The new design of Mark 5 has this unique shape that has a pretty minimal sharp and clean look. There is still a dark and a light color theme and light is a sort of cream-colored version. There are a lot of good things about this design, The ear cups are slightly bigger and wider.
they included a bump on the left earcup to give you this nice tactile reminder that you’re putting the headphones on the right way. The weight of the headset is great as well. They’re much lighter headphones compared to some of the competition, and they weigh only 249 g.
The new vegan leather material is so much softer and it’s kind of amazing it combines that with the super lightweight nature of the whole pair to make this entire pair more comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
With the USB port on the right ear cup and over on the left-hand side, we can see the on and off button Bluetooth pair and the noise-canceling slash ambient mode switch on the opposite as well.
On the right ear cup, we got the pretty standard headphone control. We can tap to stop or stop the music You can swipe up to increase volume and swipe down to decrease volume. they actually also have on-and-off head detection, despite not having a plastic cutout in the ear cup.
Mark 5 has a newly redesigned headband, and we can actually see how thin and slim it is compared to most over-the-ear headphones. It is made out of new synthetic leather, along with the new ear cups. the synthetic ear cups are also way more comfortable compared with the price point.
This Sony WH-1000XM5 new version with this new design does not fold at all. So, this new sliding headband design is the only way to adjust the size of the headphones, and they no longer fold down into a smaller size. As a result of not folding, the case you carry the headset in is quite a bit bigger.it’s kind of a cool case it looks like a modern backpack without the straps; it’s got some angular origami-type seams and folds along the sides, and once you get inside, there’s a magnetic door over a compartment that holds your charging cable and an audio cable if you need one, so this is a great case.

Sony WH-1000XM5: Noise-Canceling
Sony WH-1000XM5 is still premium lightweight comfortable noise-canceling headphones and they have considerably improved their noise-canceling capabilities once again. So, for years, Sony has been one of the greatest for travel because, as far as white noise is concerned, like road noise and all that sort of stuff,. They do a good job at canceling that right.
When it comes to the Sony Mark 5, it’s even stronger, and it still crushes that droning low end, but now some of the higher frequencies are better canceled out, like appliances and whinier human voices as well. So, this Sony’s Mark 5 does have world-class noise cancellation and we can thank the extra microphones and processor for that.

Because the main tech for the noise-canceling on the Mark 4 was four microphones on the outside, you could listen to what was happening around you and process it through one single processor to give you active noise-canceling. This time on Mark 5, double that.
Eight microphones with two separate processors give a better active noise-canceling listening experience. the frequency at which the mark fives are, they actually target higher frequencies, like when on a plane, like high-pitched sounds, to give you a better active noise-canceling experience.
Now with any noise-canceling headphones and all those mics, you also have a transparency mode, and they have 20 levels of adjustment in the app of how much transparency gets through. They’re really good, and it sounds like you’re not wearing headphones; you just hear everyone’s voices and everything perfectly clearly. There is actually a specifically enhanced voice toggle as well.
We can simply turn on transparency mode by putting our hands on the ear cup of the headset. It’s such a useful feature and works so seamlessly, and it actually works extremely well for a bunch of different occasions.
Sony WH-1000XM5: Sound Quality
Actual musical sound quality is very similar to previous headsets, which are, to say, excellent, and they do have a new 30 mil redesigned driver that is actually made out of carbon fiber. Sony did include two features on them that really do help you find the way they sound. These features are the equalizer and LDAC support.
LDAC is a proprietary Sony codec that allows you to stream higher-quality music over Bluetooth and is supported by devices like many Android phones; however, there is no support for it on Apple products.
The XM5 also has DSEE Extreme processing to make lower-quality music sound better, and there is a sensor that auto-pauses music when you take it off and resumes when you put it on.
The equalizer, which is found in the Sony headphones app, gives you full control over the EQ of the headphones. By default, the XM5 (Mark 5) is a little heavy in the mids and definitely a bit heavy with the base.
So, the EQ feature allows me to adjust them a bit to make them sound a bit brighter and reduce the base a bit. But, of course, how something sounds is a bit subjective.
there is still back support if you have the right combination of smartphone and music source. If you have an Android phone, this is one of the absolute best-sounding noise-canceling wireless headphones available.
When we are in a crowded area, we can hear absolute silence behind a perfectly isolated bass line and hear every detail of the vocal of some song, like in a live recording session with this sound quality. So, that’s what makes these headphones so good.
Sony WH-1000XM5: Software
You have to download and install the Sony Headphones Connect app on your Android or iOS smartphone in order to get the most out of your use of the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. Then we have to simply switch on the headphones after installation to enable pairing with your smartphone.
The application has four main tabs. These are Status, Sound, System, and Services. The Status tab shows us the music being played now and it provides back, play, and forward buttons with a volume slider below the controls.
You may adjust the listening experience on the sound screen by using equalization, connection quality, and 360-degree reality. 360 Reality Audio is similarly asking for photos of your ears and that data is put to good use in adjusting the signal to your headphones to implement 360 Reality Audio.
You can customize your voice assistant and manage other settings for your headphones and audio source connection on the System screen. There are also other services, like Spotify Tap. You can analyze the smartphone software to design the ideal listening experience for you.
Sony WH-1000XM5: Call Quality
As I mentioned above, the XM5 has four beam-forming microphones with a feature called Sony’s Precise Voice Pickup technology dedicated to your voice. According to Sony, those four mics work with AI-powered noise reduction and wind noise reduction to help your calls sound as clear as possible.
It basically eliminates all background noise except your voice. When you’re making a call in public, the person on the other end will never hear anything except your voice.
Over the years, Sony has continuously enhanced the call quality of its WH-1000 line in addition to its noise-canceling capabilities. So far, the XM5 headphones offer the finest performance. All of these technologies work together to ensure that the WH-1000XM5 hears your voice clearly and without distortion.
Sony WH-1000XM5: Battery Life
When it comes to battery life, even with the two processors, the eight microphones, and the new drivers, we can still get 30 hours of music playback with ANC on and 40 hours of battery life with the Bluetooth connection. It is an increase of 2 hours compared with XM4.
They do have quicker charging now, so we can actually charge this up for three minutes and get three hours of battery life. It is a travel feature. Charging via USB-C, and we can switch actively between multiple devices, as we mentioned before.

Verdict
Finally, when we are listening to music, if anything, the active noise cancellation is on, so we can’t hear anything else around us. Sound quality and call quality are great and there are many features to prove it.
I would say these are the best active noise-canceling headphones for travel that you can get for the money because of the new comfortable design, the new processing unit, and, of course, the eight microphones in the robust traveling case.
